Paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis) usually live at rice fields in China, Korea, Vietnam. It was bring to Europe in 1896 as one of first aquarium fish. It grow up to 12 cm, and get full colors after one year. Male is usually bigger than female, got brighter colors and have longer fins.

Males should be keept apart as they usually fight each other - at least keep them in tank big enough for every male to get his own territory. For couple it should be at least 50 litres, with 5-10 cm of space between surface of water and a cover. Always keep tank covered as the paradise fish like to jump over water. Every paradise fish is different, one might be peacefull, while another - natural born killer. Temperature does not really matter, everything between 15'C and 30'C will be good.

Resistance of macropodus opercularis is legendary. They can survive water pollution caused by unexperienced hobbyst, rapid changes of temperature, lack of oxygene. They can also stand most of diseases. Its excellent fish for kids.

Paradise fish eats nearly everything, besides plants. Commercial flakes can keep them in good condition, they will also eat almost every small animal - even ones that no other fish will take, even hydras (Paradise fishes are sometimes used as natural treatment against hydras and other unwanted animals). But their favourite food is flies. They can jump up to 10 cm to catch one, so keep tank covered all the time.
