Generally, we should treat the paradise fish exactly like any gourami. The major differences: a breeding tank should be a little smaller, and the temperature a lil higher. Fry is usually more resistant to the water pollution, so the paradise fish is easier to breed than gourami. Its even possible to start the protozoa culture in same tank where fry live. The young fish grow faster, after 2-3 months they usually have full colors and are large enough to sell them. Not very fertile, up to 500 fries at once. Surely it should be the fish that everyone start with, as it's easy to breed and really beautifull. Like for nearly every labyrinth fish, a fresh water, lower water level and increased temperature will stimulate spawn, so keep them for few weeks in not-so-clean water, with the temperature around 24 'C, then put them in the spawning tank, even 15 litres will do the work, with the temperature around 26-28 'C and the water level around 15 cm. Male should be putted in the tank at the morning, little girl around afternoon. They will probably spawn next day, a beautifull thing to see - do not miss it! Keep the male in a spawning tank or take him away, it doesn't really matter, but the female might be killed after the spawn so put her back into a normal tank right after it. After few days the little fry should start his first hunt for the food - its time to feed them. They are very small, so at beginning only the smallest food will work - very little of the crushed egg, protozoa, and if you really have no other food - the commercial fry food. After few weeks little paradise fishes will start to use their labyrinth - remember to keep the temperature of water and temperature of air above water surface at the same level, or they might die. As soon as they start to breathe normally (usually after 3 weeks) there will be no more problems with them. |
