Everyone want to breed a neon tetra. Its not really difficult, but not easy either. One rule must be remembered - keep it as clean as possible, nearly like in a laboratory. Its no big deal to breed them, real problem is to keep the fry alive for first 2 weeks. Tiny breeding tank, even smaller than 10 litres, water level - below 10 cm, something to protect eggs, a small plant to stimulate breeding. We have to choose carefully a couple that already paid attention to themselves. They must be young. Water clean like crystal, very soft, pH 6-6,5 (no less). Temperature - 23 C, best choice is to filter water few days at row, then pour 2 drops of acryflavine in it. Now cover it very carefully, so no light can touch the eggs. Usually at morning they spawn, and after a week the fry start to seeking for a food. When it happens, carefully remove the cover, one part at once, to do not blind the fries. Now the problems start. Little tetras are very fussy, sometimes they eat like there will be no tomorrow, sometimes they starve themselves to death. Start with protozoa, then very little cyclopes, then artemia. Try everything and pray to Gods :). After first weeks they gain colours and practically there is no more problems with them. From single spawn usually comes around 100 little tetras (50 up to 250). They can be also breed in large groups. Consider bigger spawning tank - but not so big, 25 litres should be more than enough. Divide them by sex, the males together and the females together then feed with the living food. One day at the morning put the females to spawning tank, next day - put the males, number twice as females. |
