Achatina is the greatest African land snail. They can weight up to 0,5 kg, their shell can reach 20 cm and more. Achatina live up to 5 years.

Snails are herbavores, so we don't need to worry about cannibalism (unlikely to other terrarium animals), yet we should not keep so many of them in a single tank. Use roots as a decoration (all living plants will be destroyed), some earth at bottom (around 4 cm). Do not put any stones inside - sometimes snail might fail and it can lead to shell damage if it hit stone.

Achatina are active mostly during night, but they eat all the time. Feed them with carrots, radish, apples, random plants. Do not use a lettuce as food - it might disturb calcium metabolism and cause shell damage. Always keep some calcium in terrarium, deficiency of this minerale is the worst enemy of our pets. Temperature should be around 24-27 'C. Sprinkle them regulary - they LOVE it, trust me :)

Sometimes snails can seal their shells and fall asleep. Usually the reason is a lack of moisture, but also can be low temperature or deficiency of calcium. If they do so, pour them with the water - its like wake up call for snails.

Breeding achatina is more than easy. They are hermaphrodites, a single snail is both boy and girl. But still we need a couple to do the trick. They exchange seed. One month after copulation the snail lay around 200 eggs - it need some earth to do so. 2 weeks later we have plenty of little snails.
